Questions Grow Around Newsom Probe

Senator Adam Schiff’s answer on the Gavin Newsom probe may have done more to sharpen the controversy than calm it.

Quick Take

  • Schiff said the presumption should be that a president-ordered probe is in bad faith until proven otherwise.
  • Federal sources and multiple outlets say the Newsom investigation began in California, not with Donald Trump.
  • The probe reportedly centers on Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s tax filings and related nonprofit records.
  • Newsom says agents contacted friends, family, and former staff while digging for records.

What Schiff Said

Senator Adam Schiff said the Newsom case should be viewed with a presumption of bad faith when a president targets a political rival. In a June 16 interview, he said the probe was “deliberate” and argued that suspicion should run against the investigation until facts prove otherwise.[2] That line sounded forceful, but it also kept the focus on politics instead of the legal facts.

That choice matters because Schiff is not speaking in a vacuum. He is a former target of Trump-era scrutiny, and he has long framed these fights as part of a wider abuse of federal power. In this case, though, his answer gave critics room to say he was dodging the core question: whether the Newsoms did anything wrong, or whether this is just another political fight dressed up as law enforcement.[1]

What the Probe Appears To Cover

The strongest reporting says the investigation began in California in 2025 and was driven by whistleblower complaints, not a direct order from Washington.[3][5] Sources also say federal prosecutors in Sacramento are handling the case.[3] Several reports say one part of the inquiry centers on Jennifer Siebel Newsom’s tax filings and a nonprofit connected to her, while another appears tied to a former chief of staff in a separate fraud case.[2][4]

That background weakens the claim that this is clearly a Trump-launched retaliation case. It does not prove the probe is justified, and it does not clear anyone of wrongdoing. It does, however, show why the public argument has become so tangled. Newsom says federal agents are hunting for a crime instead of responding to one. The reporting says investigators started with California whistleblowers and moved from there.[3][4]

Why the Political Heat Is Rising

The timing is explosive because Newsom has built his defense around claims of selective enforcement. He says agents contacted family friends and former staff members and asked for records without evidence of a crime.[4] California Attorney General Rob Bonta backed that view, saying Trump had “weaponized” the Justice Department for political persecutions.[3] That message will resonate with voters who already think elite institutions protect insiders.

At the same time, the probe sits next to a real scandal in Newsom’s orbit. Former chief of staff Dana Williamson pleaded guilty in a separate federal fraud case tied to campaign money.[6] That does not prove Newsom’s guilt, but it gives the investigation more weight in the public mind. It also explains why Schiff’s sweeping defense lands awkwardly: he is arguing motive before the facts are fully public, and that leaves room for both sides to claim the system is being bent for power.

What Remains Unknown

The biggest gap is simple: the Justice Department has not publicly laid out the full basis for the probe, and no charges have been filed against Newsom or his wife.[2][4] Newsom’s team has demanded records, but the public still lacks grand jury material, whistleblower statements, and the exact scope of the inquiry.[4] Until those documents surface, the story will remain trapped between two competing claims: political abuse on one side, and a serious financial probe on the other.
