  • He got out with a rifle, shot and killed a woman, then exchanged gunfire with an armed Citibank security guard inside a cafeteria.
  • 911 calls came in at 12:11 p.m., and the guard engaged the gunman by about 12:15 p.m., according to law enforcement.
  • 367 deputies responded, and the sheriff says the guard’s quick action may have saved more lives.
  • The suspect was pronounced dead at Tampa General Hospital after the shootout.

Gunman Crashes Through Fence Before Fatal Shooting

Hillsborough County Chief Deputy Frank Losat told reporters the attack began when a man drove his vehicle over medians near the Citibank campus. He then crashed through a fence into an outdoor seating area used by employees. The man got out of the car carrying a rifle. He shot and killed a woman at the scene before moving toward the building.

The woman’s death and the chaos that followed set off a rapid emergency response. Multiple 911 calls reached Hillsborough County dispatchers starting at 12:11 p.m., according to information attributed to law enforcement. Within minutes, an armed Citibank security guard confronted the gunman inside a cafeteria on the campus, leading to an exchange of gunfire.

Security Guard Confronts Shooter Within Minutes

The guard engaged the gunman by roughly 12:15 p.m., just four minutes after the first emergency calls came in. The suspect was shot during that exchange. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. News outlets citing Chief Deputy Losat consistently report two deaths: the woman killed outside and the suspect killed in the cafeteria shootout.

Sheriff Chad Chronister said the gunman was “intent on killing as many people as possible.” He credited the security team with stopping the threat before anyone else was hurt. Losat said the guard’s actions may have saved other lives. Those statements reflect the sheriff’s office’s early account of the attack, based on witness information and the scene itself.

Massive Law Enforcement Response Clears Campus

A total of 367 deputies responded to the scene, an enormous deployment for a single office complex. Officers worked to clear the building and secure the area. The entire campus was cleared within about two and a half hours of the first 911 call, reflecting the scale of the law enforcement reaction to an active shooting inside a corporate workplace.

Authorities initially withheld the names of both the victim and the suspect while the investigation continued. Officials had not disclosed a motive or said whether the two knew each other in the earliest briefings. That gap leaves open whether the attack targeted a specific person or was a random act of violence, a question investigators are still working to answer.

Armed Guard Interventions Remain Rare Nationally

Federal data shows how unusual this kind of outcome is. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) counted 223 active shooter incidents nationwide from 2020 through 2024, including 24 in 2024 alone. In most of those cases, police officers—not private security guards—end up confronting the shooter. Security personnel intervened in only one incident in 2024 and two incidents in 2023.

That rarity helps explain why the Citibank shooting drew such heavy attention from local and national media. A guard stopping an active threat within minutes, before police even arrived in force, is an outcome officials are eager to highlight. It also explains why so many unanswered questions, including the gunman’s motive and the exact sequence of gunfire, remain under investigation.
