President Trump is threatening to send federal troops into Chicago after another bloody weekend — and the city’s Democratic leaders are telling him to stay out.
Quick Take
- Trump posted on Truth Social that 22 people were shot and at least 4 were killed in Chicago over a recent weekend, claiming he could make the city safe “in one month.”
- Illinois Governor JB Pritzker fired back, calling Trump’s push for military intervention illegal and unconstitutional, and insisting there is “no emergency” in Chicago.
- Chicago’s homicide total for 2024 was 573 — and while violent crime has been falling, it remains above pre-2020 levels.
- Research shows that a mayor’s or governor’s political party has little to no measurable effect on a city’s crime rate, suggesting the blame game on both sides oversimplifies the problem.
Trump Sounds the Alarm After a Violent Weekend
Trump posted on Truth Social calling out the violence directly. “Lots of killing going on in Chicago. 22 people shot, at least 4 dead,” he wrote, adding that he could clean up the city in a single month. He called Governor JB Pritzker “weak and pathetic” for refusing federal help. In earlier posts tied to a separate violent weekend in late August, Trump cited six deaths and 24 shootings, warning Pritzker to “straighten it out, FAST, or we’re coming.” [10]
Trump also called out Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson by name, saying neither the mayor nor the governor was doing their job. He floated sending up to 1,000 National Guard troops to the city — a move similar to deployments already carried out in Washington, D.C., and Los Angeles. The White House had reportedly been planning the Chicago deployment for months. [12]
Pritzker Pushes Back Hard
Governor Pritzker did not back down. He toured South Side neighborhoods and told reporters there is “no emergency here that calls for military intervention.” He said Trump was “looking for any excuse to send in the military to a blue city in a blue state to intimidate his political opponents.” Pritzker and city officials threatened legal action to block any deployment. [3]
Mayor Johnson added his own numbers to the debate. He said Chicago had seen a 30% drop in homicides, a 35% drop in robberies, and nearly a 40% drop in shootings over the past year. Johnson also signed an executive order limiting how much the Chicago Police Department could cooperate with the National Guard and shielding undocumented residents from federal removal. [14]
The Numbers Tell a Complicated Story
Both sides are cherry-picking the data that helps their case. Chicago recorded 573 homicides in 2024. That is lower than the 2021 peak but still above the city’s rates from 2013 to 2015 and from 2019. [22] A separate report found violent crime in Chicago fell to a decade low in 2025, dropping across 88% of the city’s neighborhoods. [7] At the same time, Chicago has held the title of homicide capital of the country for 13 straight years when measured by total killings. [2]
Independent research adds important context. A peer-reviewed study found that a mayor’s political party has “no detectable impact” on crime rates, police staffing, or arrest rates. [18] Other research shows that factors like poverty, inequality, and neighborhood disinvestment are far stronger predictors of violent crime than who runs city hall. [19] That doesn’t mean leadership is off the hook — but it does mean the simple “Democrats caused this” or “Trump is just playing politics” arguments both leave out most of the picture.
What’s Really at Stake for Everyday Chicagoans
Lost in the political back-and-forth are the people actually living with the violence. Residents in high-crime neighborhoods on the South and West Sides have dealt with decades of disinvestment, not just bad policy from one party or one election cycle. Crime statistics improving on paper means little to someone who won’t ride the train at night or take their family to a ball game. [21] Real people are being shot and killed while politicians argue over who deserves the blame.

Both Trump and Pritzker have political reasons to keep this fight going. Pritzker is widely seen as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, and standing up to Trump raises his national profile. Trump, meanwhile, has used Democratic-run cities as a recurring talking point since his first term. The people of Chicago deserve more than a headline war. They deserve leaders — at every level — focused on the hard, unglamorous work of rebuilding communities and keeping families safe. [16]
