Mayorkas Asserts No Evidence Of ISIS Plot By Migrants

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas addressed concerns about over 400 migrants brought to the U.S. by an ISIS-affiliated human smuggling network on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.” He claimed that there is no evidence these individuals are plotting to harm the U.S.

Mayorkas emphasized that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) prioritizes the safety and security of Americans. “We screen and vet individuals at the time of encounter. If we learn of derogatory information, we take enforcement action,” he said.

During the broadcast, co-host Mika Brzezinski asked about reports from NBC News regarding the DHS’s identification of migrants connected to the smuggling network and the continued release of illegal crossers into the U.S. while they pursue asylum claims. Brzezinski highlighted concerns over the effectiveness of these processes.

Mayorkas responded by correcting misconceptions. “We have no evidence that they are individuals plotting to harm the United States. That is inaccurate,” he stated, reiterating the rigorous vetting procedures in place to ensure national security.

Addressing the issue of releasing migrants, Mayorkas noted a significant drop in the number of individuals released into immigration enforcement proceedings since the president’s proclamation. He explained that the U.S. lacks sufficient detention capacity, a longstanding issue predating the current administration. Consequently, some individuals must be released and monitored through Alternatives to Detention programs.

Mayorkas pointed out the need for congressional action to address the underlying problems in the immigration system. “We’re operating within a broken immigration system. We need Congress to fix it. Everyone agrees with that. It hasn’t been fixed since 1996,” he said.

In summary, Mayorkas assured the public of DHS’s commitment to security while highlighting systemic issues requiring legislative solutions.
