Zelenskyy Pushes For European Army As US Seeks Peace In Ukraine

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is attempting to drive a wedge between the United States and Europe, exploiting concerns over U.S. military support to justify the formation of a European Army. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference, he claimed Europe must take full responsibility for its defense, using fear of a changing U.S. policy to push for a new military force independent of NATO.

Zelenskyy’s demand for a European Army comes as President Donald Trump works to bring an end to the ongoing war. With the U.S. shifting its focus toward diplomacy rather than endless weapons shipments, Zelenskyy has turned to European leaders, insisting that they must step up where the U.S. has begun to pull back.

This proposal contradicts years of EU assurances that NATO would remain the continent’s primary security alliance. However, with Zelenskyy sensing that the U.S. is no longer an open checkbook, he has changed his strategy — hoping to secure European funding and military resources to keep the war going.

During his remarks, he also cast doubt on the potential for peace, claiming that Russia is ‘not preparing for dialogue’. By continuing to frame the war as an existential crisis for Europe, he is working to pressure EU leaders into committing their own military forces, ensuring Ukraine’s war effort does not collapse.

Poland’s Donald Tusk appeared open to the idea, while other European officials expressed skepticism about pouring more resources into Ukraine, particularly after years of reports of corruption and mismanaged aid. The prospect of an EU military force — long dismissed by European leaders — is now being floated as a direct result of Zelenskyy’s pressure campaign.

Meanwhile, as U.S. officials explore diplomatic solutions, Zelenskyy appears determined to prevent an end to the war. His call for a European Army is not about securing Europe — it is about ensuring his war continues, even if it means dividing the West in the process.
