Sheriff Dale Schmidt of Dodge County has warned that Wisconsin could face disastrous consequences if President Donald Trump does not win the election. Speaking during a House Judiciary Committee hearing in Milwaukee, Schmidt outlined how the border crisis is leading to a surge in crime and putting pressure on local law enforcement resources.
Schmidt, who heads the Badger State Sheriffs Association, testified that the state’s law enforcement agencies are struggling due to the border crisis. “If Trump doesn’t win this election, we are screwed,” Schmidt said, quoting a fellow sheriff. He added that many do not realize how serious the situation has become.

Discussing his own experiences, Schmidt pointed to an increase in drug trafficking activity in Dodge County, much of it linked to Mexican cartels. “I’m fearful for my family and the families of my colleagues,” he said. Schmidt highlighted the risks posed by cartel violence and drug activity in his county.
He also explained that officers frequently stop individuals without identification or licenses, complicating their ability to enforce the law effectively. “We need the federal government to secure the southern border,” Schmidt emphasized, noting that Wisconsin suffers 1,500 fentanyl deaths annually.
“We will have more cartel members coming into the state of Wisconsin.”

Schmidt commended Sen. Ron Johnson (R-WI) for attending the hearing but expressed disappointment that Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) did not participate, criticizing her absence during a time of crisis.
Fond du Lac County District Attorney Eric Toney also testified, sharing similar concerns. He said that the county’s location along major highways has made it a hub for drug trafficking. “We’ve seen drug seizures reach unprecedented levels,” Toney reported, noting that the rising number of illegal immigrants being arrested is contributing to jail overcrowding and forcing counties to expand their facilities.
Republican candidates, including President Trump and Eric Hovde, are campaigning heavily on the border crisis issue, calling for stronger federal measures to secure the border and protect communities like those in Wisconsin.
