Tucker Carlson recently spoke at a Heritage Foundation event during the Republican National Convention, claiming that the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump is evidence of a “spiritual battle” in the United States. Carlson believes that deeper, malevolent forces are at play, targeting Christians specifically.
Carlson shared his views on the incident at Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, suggesting that the attack was not just a political act but part of a larger, more sinister agenda. “It’s the religion of Jesus that makes them angry, and that suggests that maybe there is something a little deeper going on here,” Carlson said.
He argued that the current societal divisions cannot be understood in mere political terms. “There is a spiritual battle under way,” he stated. “These are not political divides. There are forces — and they’re very obvious now; they’ve decided, for whatever reason, to take off the mask — whose only goal is chaos, violence, destruction.”
Carlson believes these forces are particularly hostile toward Christians. “What group do they dislike most? What group are they absolutely terrified of and hoping to eliminate? Well, it’s Christians,” he said. He pointed out that Christians are targeted because of their beliefs and practices, mentioning “Christian nationalism,” “people who pray outside abortion clinics,” and those who “celebrate Easter, not Trans Visibility Day.”
He referenced historical revolutions to support his claim, saying that the anger towards Christianity is a sign of something deeper. “It’s not just that they’re in the way. Christians are hardly in the way. They’re the most peaceable people there are,” he said, highlighting the teachings of Jesus to turn the other cheek and pray for persecutors.
Carlson has previously warned about what he calls a spiritual battle in the U.S. Earlier this year, he argued that the increasing political conflicts indicate a struggle that is “not flesh and blood at all.” This perspective echoes the apostle Paul’s words in Ephesians about fighting against “spiritual forces of evil.”
