Former President Donald Trump has made a bold promise to secure the release of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was recently sentenced to 16 years in a Russian penal colony on charges of espionage. Trump declared that he would accomplish this without any form of compensation to Russia if he is re-elected in November.
Gershkovich, 32, has been imprisoned for 16 months in Russia’s Lefortovo Prison, known for its harsh conditions and for housing political prisoners. The charges against him have been widely criticized as unfounded by international observers and Gershkovich’s employers.
In a fiery post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was just sentenced to 16 years in prison by a Russian Court. Biden will NEVER GET HIM OUT, unless he pays a ‘king’s ransom.’ I will get him out FOR NO COMPENSATION immediately following our victory on November 5th, and it will be my great honor to do so.”
Trump’s statement also included a call to action for voters, urging them to support him in the upcoming election and criticizing the Wall Street Journal, “Vote for TRUMP, and The Wall Street Journal should STOP BEING STUPID!!!”
Gershkovich’s conviction has been condemned by numerous world leaders and human rights organizations, who see it as a political maneuver by Russian President Vladimir Putin in response to the U.S. support of Ukraine. The journalist’s case has become a symbol of the broader conflict and the targeting of journalists in politically charged situations.
President Joe Biden, reacting to the verdict, reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom and condemned Russia’s actions. “As I have long said and as the UN also concluded, there is no question that Russia is wrongfully detaining Evan. Journalism is not a crime. We will continue to stand strong for press freedom in Russia and worldwide, and stand against all those who seek to attack the press or target journalists,” Biden stated.
Trump’s promise to bring Gershkovich home without any concessions stands in stark contrast to the current administration’s diplomatic efforts and highlights his confidence in negotiating with foreign leaders. His remarks have intensified the ongoing debate over the most effective strategies to secure the release of American citizens detained abroad and have added a significant point of contention in the upcoming presidential race.
