Trump Asserts US Must Control Greenland For National Security

President-elect Donald Trump has declared that U.S. ownership of Greenland is essential for securing national and global safety. The statement came as Trump announced his nomination of Ken Howery to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, which governs Greenland.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” Trump said in a social media post on Sunday.

Trump argued that Greenland’s strategic location would help counter increasing threats from Russia and China, both of which have invested heavily in Arctic development. He suggested U.S. control of the island would solidify America’s position in the region and ensure military and economic advantages.

Greenland, the largest island in the world, has become a focal point for Arctic competition due to its resources and proximity to critical shipping lanes. Trump framed the island’s acquisition as a key step in the U.S. gaining the upper hand in the Arctic race.

Ken Howery, Trump’s nominee for ambassador to Denmark, previously served as U.S. Ambassador to Sweden. Trump praised Howery’s background as a co-founder of PayPal and Founders Fund, highlighting his ability to advance American innovation and diplomacy.

“Ken will do a tremendous job representing the United States,” Trump said, reiterating the importance of Greenland in America’s long-term strategy for national security and global influence.
