Trump Administration Investigates Maine As Governor Refuses To Act On EO

Maine Gov. Janet Mills is now facing a federal investigation after publicly rejecting President Donald Trump’s executive order banning male athletes from competing in women’s sports. Within hours of her refusal, the Trump administration took action, launching an inquiry into the legality of Maine’s policies.

At a White House gathering of governors, President Donald Trump called out Mills, asking if her state would comply with the order. Mills avoided a direct response, claiming Maine follows both state and federal law. President Donald Trump wasted no time in warning that noncompliance would result in Maine losing federal education funds.

Mills pushed back, telling President Donald Trump, “See you in court.” The president responded that he looked forward to the fight, predicting a legal defeat for Mills and suggesting she would struggle to remain in politics.

Shortly after the exchange, the Trump administration’s Department of Education confirmed an investigation into Maine’s handling of Title IX protections. Officials cited reports that Greely High School has permitted male students to compete in female sports, raising concerns over violations of federal law.

Craig Trainor, acting assistant secretary for civil rights, stated that Maine must adhere to Title IX if it wishes to continue receiving federal funding. He made it clear that the Trump administration would not allow states to use taxpayer dollars while refusing to follow federal anti-discrimination laws.

At CPAC, President Donald Trump continued pressing Mills, calling her stance unacceptable and vowing that the Trump administration would hold states accountable for defying federal law. The audience responded with loud boos as he doubled down on his commitment to protecting fairness in women’s sports.
