Internal polling from the Teamsters union indicates that President Donald Trump has significant support from its members, outpacing Kamala Harris by a wide margin. This development suggests a shift in union voting preferences that could have substantial implications for the 2024 election.
The Teamsters Electronic Member Poll, conducted between July 24 and September 15, shows Trump leading with 59.6% support, while Harris garnered just 34%. The remaining 6.4% of respondents favored other candidates. A separate Teamsters Research Phone Poll, conducted between September 9 and 15, also reflected a similar trend. Trump earned 58% support, while Harris trailed with 31%, and 6% were undecided, with 5% saying they “don’t know.”
The results mark a shift from the union’s traditional support for Democratic candidates. Historically, labor unions have been a stronghold for Democrats, but the polling suggests that Trump’s policies may be resonating more with union workers this election cycle. Sean M. O’Brien, General President of the Teamsters, shared the poll results, emphasizing the union’s transparent and democratic endorsement process.
“We are delivering on our promise to let our members’ voices guide the decision,” O’Brien stated in a post on X. While no official endorsement has been made, O’Brien indicated that the union’s General Executive Board would make a decision soon, with Wednesday being a possible announcement date.
With Trump’s strong support within the Teamsters, the race for labor union endorsements could significantly influence the outcome of the 2024 election. These polls demonstrate the potential for shifts in the political landscape.
