Stephen A. Smith has called out Democrats for their fixation on opposing President Donald Trump at the expense of addressing real issues facing Americans. During an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Smith argued that the party’s obsession with standing against Trump instead of focusing on policies that matter to voters is damaging their chances in future elections.
Pointing to Democrats’ behavior during Trump’s recent address to Congress, Smith criticized them for refusing to acknowledge key moments in the speech, including a tribute to a young cancer survivor and the widow of a slain officer. He described their actions as “pathetic” and proof that their priorities are misplaced.
He also mocked a widely shared video showing multiple Democratic lawmakers repeating the same scripted anti-Trump remarks. Smith said the lack of originality and authenticity in their messaging further alienates voters, making it clear they have no real solutions to offer.
Smith warned that Democrats’ strategy is failing, especially if Trump’s economic policies, including tariffs, produce positive results. He stated that if Trump’s policies succeed, Democrats will be left scrambling for a response. “Lord help them if the tariffs situation works in Trump’s favor,” he said.
According to Smith, the Democratic Party has lost touch with the working class, a group it once championed. He said the party’s shift toward radical leftist priorities has left many traditional supporters feeling abandoned, a trend reflected in recent polling. A Quinnipiac University poll from January showed the party’s approval rating at 31%, with a 57% disapproval rating. Meanwhile, Republicans held a 43% favorable rating.
Smith, who has been critical of both parties, made it clear he believes Democrats need a major shift in direction. “I’m ready to purge the damn party,” he said, emphasizing that if they continue on this course, they will only strengthen Trump’s position heading into future elections.
