Speaker Johnson Endorses Controversial Establishment Ohio House Candidate

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) surprised many when he granted his endorsement in a key Ohio congressional race. Then again, it may not be a shock that he aligned with state Rep Derek Merrin (R) against sold Trump supporter J.R. Majewski.

After all, many conservatives take strong issue with questionable actions and inactions since Johnson assumed the gavel.

For one, Biden’s southern border remains wide open and millions of unvetted illegals continue to pour into the nation. Johnson proudly proclaimed the $1.59 trillion budget for 2024 that pours yet more unaccountable funds into foreign wars.

The budget, however, failed to address the border crisis even as it was applauded by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (R-NY) — never a good sign.

Johnson also wielded his power to shoot down a strong effort to reform FISA Section 702 and protect law-abiding Americans from the FBI’s insidious warrantless spying.

Johnson, in a statement revealed by the Washington Examiner, gave a whole-hearted push for Merrin. “Derek is a proven conservative and demonstrated leader with a backbone who will prioritize economic growth, safer communities and America First policies.”

Merrin must survive a crowded field of Republican contenders for Ohio’s 9th District. One of his rivals is former state Rep. Craig Riedel, who at one point appeared to be the GOP favorite.

He secured the endorsement of House GOP Chairwoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY), but that backing was subsequently rescinded. Riedel was revealed on tape blasting former President and current 2024 Republican frontrunner Donald Trump as arrogant.

Stefanik has not announced her new selection in the important race. Majewski and Steve Lankenau are others vying for the nomination.

The 9th District is believed by many to be a key competition in the November election. Republicans view it as a great chance to flip a House seat and keep or add to their slender majority.

The seat is currently occupied by Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH).

Though Johnson’s support may yet prove valuable for Merrin, many in the party view it as just another sign that the Speaker is out of step with true conservatives.
