Smugglers Warn Migrants To Cross Border Before Trump Tightens Security

Human traffickers are telling migrants to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally before President-elect Donald Trump takes office, warning that tougher immigration policies will make crossings far more difficult. According to the Wall Street Journal, smugglers are using WhatsApp to urge migrants to act quickly, saying, “It’s now or never.”

These traffickers, often linked to cartels, claim that Trump’s administration will immediately strengthen border enforcement, including shutting down pathways for illegal entry. The messages have also sarcastically wished migrants “luck” in avoiding capture once these changes are implemented.

Trump has pledged to reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy, deploy National Guard troops to the border, and restart construction of the border wall. He also plans to reintroduce Title 42, a policy allowing for the rapid expulsion of migrants without asylum hearings.

Mexican law enforcement has reportedly advised migrants against making the journey, but the warnings have not deterred many from attempting to cross. U.S. border officials are preparing for a potential surge in crossings ahead of Trump’s inauguration.

Texas has taken proactive steps by deploying additional law enforcement personnel to its border with Mexico. Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has long advocated for stricter border security and continues to support measures aimed at reducing illegal immigration.

The traffickers’ warnings reflect the expected impact of Trump’s immigration reforms. His administration’s approach is anticipated to dramatically shift U.S. border policy, signaling a stark departure from the Biden administration’s handling of immigration.
