Sen. Elizabeth Warren announced on CNN’s “State of the Union” that Kamala Harris, if elected president, intends to work with Congress to establish a pathway to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants. This proposal follows a substantial increase in illegal immigration during President Joe Biden’s administration, after he reversed Trump-era policies requiring asylum seekers to remain in Mexico until their court hearings.
“I believe we need to create a pathway to citizenship,” Warren stated. “Kamala Harris will work with Congress and get that done.”
Since Biden assumed office in 2020, over 10 million illegal immigrants have entered the United States. Harris, appointed to manage the border crisis in March 2021, was given the title “border czar,” although she has since distanced herself from this responsibility.
During her interview with Jake Tapper, Warren faced questions about the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies. “I don’t need to tell you voters overwhelmingly disapprove of how the Biden-Harris administration has handled the border,” Tapper said. “By giving the nomination to one of the leaders of the border effort, aren’t Democrats doubling down on one of your party’s biggest vulnerabilities?”
Warren defended Harris, noting that current border crossings are lower than during Trump’s last year in office. She stressed the necessity of comprehensive immigration reform, saying, “We need the tools in order to have more resources at the border, to have more resources in the states and cities that are supporting migrants. And I believe we need to create a pathway to citizenship. All of that is part of what we need to do for comprehensive immigration reform. Kamala Harris will work with Congress and get that done.”
The Trump campaign has consistently criticized the Biden-Harris administration’s open-border policies. At a rally in Minnesota, Republican VP nominee JD Vance criticized Harris’s immigration stance, stating, “She wants to hand over control of our country to people who shouldn’t be here in the first place. And we cannot let her.”
Vance added, “I have a message, a very simple message to the millions of illegal aliens who are in this country and shouldn’t be: If you are here, start packing your bags right now because Donald J. Trump is coming back into office.”
The proposed pathway to citizenship has sparked a heated debate, highlighting the stark differences between the Democratic and Republican parties on immigration policy as the 2024 election approaches.
