Following President Joe Biden’s announcement that he will not seek reelection in 2024, Republicans have intensified calls for him to resign immediately. Biden’s decision, made public in a post on X, also included his endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris for the Democratic nomination. This announcement has sparked a strong response from GOP leaders, who question Biden’s capability to continue serving as President.
“If Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President,” stated Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana on X. “He must resign the office immediately. November 5 cannot arrive soon enough.”
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), the party’s vice-presidential nominee, voiced similar concerns. “Not running for reelection would be a clear admission that President Trump was right all along about Biden not being mentally fit enough to serve as Commander-in-Chief,” Vance posted.
Other Republican senators echoed these sentiments. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) tweeted, “Then RESIGN your office. If you can’t run a mere political campaign, you can’t be President.” Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) added, “Joe Biden was never mentally fit to be President. I join my colleagues in demanding that President Biden resign immediately.”
House Republicans also joined the call for Biden’s resignation. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) suggested invoking the 25th Amendment if Biden does not step down. Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) added, “If Biden can’t run for office, he should resign. Immediately.”
These demands underscore the GOP’s longstanding concerns about Biden’s cognitive abilities and their belief that his resignation is necessary for the country’s effective leadership.
