An illegal immigrant is facing serious charges after allegedly shooting a Jewish man near a Chicago synagogue last Saturday. Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, a 22-year-old Mauritanian national, had entered the U.S. illegally in 2023 and was released after being processed in San Diego, Fox News reported.
The attack happened around 9:25 a.m., according to police. Abdallahi allegedly targeted the man, who was walking to his synagogue, before returning to the scene and firing on emergency personnel. A security camera captured him shouting “Allahu Akbar” during the second round of gunfire, raising concerns over a possible hate crime motive.

Though Abdallahi was charged with 14 felonies, including attempted murder, community leaders expressed disappointment that hate crime charges were not added. Alderman Debra Silverstein voiced her frustration, pushing for the Cook County State’s Attorney to pursue the case more rigorously.
ICE reported that it had no record of interaction with Abdallahi despite his illegal status. This incident has intensified concerns about the security of U.S. borders, as more than 250 illegal immigrants flagged on the terror watch list were encountered by border authorities under the current administration.
The case has led many Chicago residents to question how individuals like Abdallahi are able to enter the country and remain without further investigation, particularly given the severity of this recent attack.
