The Deptford Mall in New Jersey has decided to step up enforcement of an existing policy on its property that requires minors to be accompanied by adult supervisors during weekends. The decision to enforce a strict curfew on unaccompanied minors comes in response to a recent surge in events in the mall involving unruly groups of teenagers causing disturbances and threatening customers. Unfortunately, the problem of teen violence in public spaces is becoming increasingly widespread nationwide.
The policy, detailed by the Deptford Township Police Department, stipulates that all children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult aged 25 or older from Friday evening through Sunday night. These adults are not just mere companions; they bear responsibility for the minors’ actions. In a time where respect for authority and public decorum is dwindling, such measures are seen as necessary steps to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all patrons.

The mall management has stated their right to limit groups larger than four persons if unaccompanied by an adult and restrict access to those under 18 during specific weekend hours. Moreover, the mall may ask for proof of age from both minors and their chaperones, accepting only valid, tamper-proof IDs with a photograph and date of birth.
This move by the Deptford Mall is not an isolated case. Many American businesses have taken proactive steps to control aggressive and violent minors in order to protect paying customers. A Pennsylvania Chick-fil-A and a Wisconsin Taco John’s have made public announcements that unattended minors would not be welcome during certain business hours, examples of a broader trend many businesses are finding necessary to protect their customers, employees, and property.
Critics might argue that such policies are too stringent or unfairly target the younger demographic. However, the necessity of these measures becomes clear in light of incidents reported by residents and workers. Tina Castelli, a Deptford resident who works at the mall, shared with NBC10 Philadelphia her observations of the chaotic scenes caused by groups of minors: fighting, vandalism, and general disregard for the safety and comfort of others, including parents, the elderly, and young children.
In a society where the line between freedom and responsibility is often blurred, enforcing such policies is a firm step toward ensuring that public spaces remain safe and welcoming for everyone.
