Mike Pence is facing mounting criticism from conservatives after launching a campaign against President Donald Trump’s choice for Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Pence’s organization, Advancing American Freedom (AAF), is urging senators to vote against Kennedy’s confirmation, raising concerns about Pence aligning with establishment Republicans over Trump’s America First agenda.
AAF’s letter, signed by President Tim Chapman and Chairman Marc Short, questions Kennedy’s commitment to pro-life policies due to his past support for abortion access. Despite Kennedy’s pledges to enforce Trump’s pro-life initiatives at HHS, Pence’s group remains unconvinced, demanding stricter assurances.
Kennedy has actively sought to address these concerns. He assured Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) that he would fully reinstate Trump’s pro-life policies, including the Mexico City policy, and cut off taxpayer funding for abortion providers. Kennedy also promised to reverse Biden-era regulations that threaten religious freedoms.
Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) expressed full support for Kennedy, stating that Kennedy’s personal beliefs are irrelevant because he is committed to executing Trump’s policies. Mullin emphasized that Kennedy understands the responsibility of serving the president’s agenda over personal views.
Conservative figures have condemned Pence for obstructing Trump’s efforts to build a pro-life administration. Natalie Winters, co-host of Steve Bannon’s War Room, criticized Pence for undermining Trump and supporting establishment interests over the conservative base.
With Democrats united in opposition, Pence’s campaign threatens to fracture Republican unity. His interference could sway key GOP votes and block Kennedy’s confirmation, potentially weakening Trump’s ability to implement his pro-life agenda.
