Man Shot By His Weapon During NYC Subway Brawl

As crime skyrockets across New York City, a man in the Big Apple was recently critically injured after being shot several times for allegedly provoking another man on a Subway train and then being struck by his weapon.

During a news conference following the incident, CBS News reported that police in New York City said the victim initially possessed the weapon before being struck by it.

Law enforcement said a 32-year-old man boarded the train at Nostrand Avenue before he was approached by a 36-year-old man who was acting aggressively. The two men then began arguing and fighting, with the 36-year-old pulling out a knife followed by a gun.

CBS News indicated that the 32-year-old then proceeded to snatch the weapon away from the other man, shooting him multiple times.

The attack comes days after New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY) deployed state National Guard troops to inspect Subway riders’ bags to try and mitigate rising crime. The New York governor also promised “teams of mental health workers” to calm riders’ fears.

On social media, an ABC News journalist posted footage of the incident, which he witnessed firsthand.

A passenger aboard the Subway also posted a video of the situation showing the minutes leading up to the shooting. The two men can be seen fighting until a passenger breaks the brawl. Despite this, shouting continued and one of the men appeared to pull a gun out of his jacket, prompting passengers to yell, “Stop!”

The footage does not show the shooting, but nags could be heard as passengers rushed to safety.

Police said a man was later taken into custody. Charges have not yet been filed.

Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) CEO Janno Lieber offered comments regarding the incident.

“Today, what we’re thinking about are a couple things — the experience of those riders who were stuck on that train in that moment, which was intense and harrowing,” Lieber said.

“And two, the fact that there were cops in numbers right there in the station. It’s exactly what we’ve been telling the public we’re going to do, we’re going to make sure that there are cops in the system to react to any circumstances at any time,” he added.
