One of the two rallygoers injured during an assassination attempt on President Donald Trump last week has issued his first statement from the hospital. On Thursday, James Copenhaver, 74, confirmed he had spoken with Trump following the attack.
The incident, which took place on Saturday, left Trump wounded in his right ear, while 57-year-old David Dutch and Copenhaver sustained gunshot wounds. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Matthews Crooks, and another attendee, Corey Comperatore, were killed in the attack. Dutch remains in stable condition, and Copenhaver has been upgraded from “critical” to “serious” condition.
“We continue to offer our thoughts and prayers for the full and speedy recovery of Mr. David Dutch and for the full recovery of President Donald Trump,” Copenhaver said in a statement obtained by Fox News. He expressed gratitude to his caregivers and highlighted his hope to eventually ride his Harley Davidson again with his best friend, Randy, who attended the rally and was the first to help him after he was shot.
Copenhaver also conveyed condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, who died while protecting his wife and daughters. A memorial service for Comperatore was held on Thursday.
“Jim would like to especially thank the first responders, medics, and hospital staff who have provided him with initial and continuing care,” Copenhaver’s family stated. “Additionally, Jim would like to express his thoughts and prayers for the other victims, their families, and President Trump. He prays for a safe and speedy recovery for them all.”
The family mentioned that Trump called Copenhaver on Thursday, after initially missing him because Copenhaver was asleep. “They were shocked by just how humble he was,” said Joseph Feldman, a spokesperson for the Copenhaver family.
Law enforcement officials have not yet revealed a motive for the shooting. However, the suspect has been identified as Thomas Matthews Crooks, 20. As the investigation continues, the community remains focused on healing and support for those affected by this tragic event.
