Kremlin Reacts To Rubio Calling Ukraine War A Struggle Between Superpowers

Russia has responded to Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s assertion that the war in Ukraine is a proxy conflict between two nuclear-armed nations, saying the statement aligns with its long-held position.

During an interview with Fox News, Rubio explained that Trump has viewed the war as a drawn-out and stalled conflict. He defended ongoing peace talks and criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for casting doubt on diplomatic efforts.

Dmitry Peskov, speaking for the Kremlin, agreed with Rubio’s characterization of the war. “This is actually a conflict between Russia and the collective West,” he stated. Peskov emphasized that Moscow has said from the beginning that Washington plays a central role in the war and that Russia has been fighting against Western influence, not just Ukraine.

Rubio’s comments highlight a change in U.S. rhetoric regarding the war. Previously, his stance on Russia was far more aggressive. However, since joining Trump’s administration, he has pushed the idea that negotiations are necessary to bring the conflict to an end.

At the same time, reports continue to reveal the extent of Washington’s involvement in Ukraine. A decade-long initiative by the CIA modernized Ukraine’s intelligence infrastructure, allowing Kyiv to strengthen its military operations. Intelligence-sharing has played a role in Ukraine’s ability to target Russian assets, but Trump recently ordered an end to that support.

The shift in U.S. policy, combined with Rubio’s remarks, suggests that the Trump administration is intent on bringing the war to a close despite opposition from Ukrainian leadership.
