Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, got up to leave the room when House Oversight Chairman James Comer recognized Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) to speak on Wednesday, during a surprise visit Biden paid to a hearing held by the House Oversight Committee to address his contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena in December.
“Excuse me, Hunter, apparently you’re afraid of my words,” could be heard saying as Biden stormed out of the room. Following a brief outburst from the room, Greene said, “I’d like to reclaim my time, Mr. Chairman.”

Biden may have had good reason to fear the Georgia delegate’s words Wednesday. The House Oversight Committee was there to determine whether or not to hold Biden in contempt of Congress, a criminal offense with potential jail time attached. The words “ARREST HIM” trended Wednesday on X, formerly Twitter. “The innocent don’t flee,” commented one X user.

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) quipped, “Who bribed Hunter Biden to be here?” when lawmakers realized Biden was in the room. “You are the epitome of white privilege. Coming into the Oversight Committee, spitting in our face, ignoring a congressional subpoena to be deposed. What are you afraid of?” Mace said. “I think that Hunter Biden should be arrested right here.”
Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) then asked for a show of hands to vote on hearing from Biden “right now.” Only the Democrats in the room raised their hands in response.
In December, Biden ignored a subpoena from the House Oversight Committee requiring him to testify. He said he would only testify publicly, objecting to the closed-door deposition House Republicans insisted on for the subpoena. The House GOP issued the subpoena as it investigates whether the president has committed impeachable offenses.
Central to the impeachment investigation is the question of whether the president benefitted improperly from his son’s business dealings in Ukraine when the older Biden was vice president in the Obama White House. The U.S. Justice Department has pursued contempt of Congress charges before — including against former Trump advisor Steve Bannon.
