Grassroots Conservatives Take Over Northeast Florida GOP

In Northeast Florida, grassroots conservatives have shaken the establishment by taking control of the Saint Johns County Republican Party. This shift comes as local GOP members endorse outsider candidates over traditional establishment figures, with significant implications for the upcoming congressional primary in Florida’s fifth district.

Earlier this year, grassroots conservative Blake Paterson was removed as chairman of the Saint Johns County Republican Executive Committee (REC). Jaime Parham temporarily filled the role until an election was held. Denver Cook, another grassroots conservative, won the election for chairman. Under Cook’s leadership, the local GOP endorsed several grassroots candidates, including Mara Macie for the U.S. House of Representatives.

Macie is challenging incumbent Rep. John Rutherford (R-FL), known for his establishment ties and controversial voting record. Rutherford has supported big government spending and foreign aid packages, including aid to Ukraine. He has also faced scrutiny for stock trades linked to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Macie, supported by grassroots efforts, stands in stark contrast, relying on small donations and grassroots organizing.

Saint Johns County, a key area in the district, is crucial for Macie’s campaign. The local GOP’s endorsement of Macie, despite Trump’s endorsement of Rutherford, signals a strong desire for change among conservative voters. Winning this county could significantly boost Macie’s chances in the primary.

The local GOP, under Cook’s leadership, has also endorsed several conservative candidates for other local offices, challenging the establishment’s dominance. The Republican Party of Florida has confirmed Cook’s legitimacy as chairman, reinforcing the grassroots movement’s position.

This upheaval in Northeast Florida highlights the growing influence of grassroots conservatives and sets the stage for a highly competitive primary. The outcome could send a strong message to Washington about the power of bottom-up political organizing.
