GOP Seeks Supreme Court Reversal After Georgia Election Law Defeat

The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the Georgia GOP are fighting to reinstate election integrity rules that were recently blocked by a Fulton County judge. Judge Thomas Cox struck down the new rules, introduced by the Georgia State Election Board, claiming the board lacked the authority to enact such changes.

The blocked rules included provisions for hand-counting paper ballots on election night and expanding access for poll watchers. RNC Chairman Michael Whatley criticized the ruling, calling it a blow to election transparency and accusing the court of siding with Democrats who oppose the reforms.

On Oct. 19, Republican leaders appealed to the Georgia Supreme Court, asking it to pause the lower court’s ruling and allow the rules to be enforced while the appeal continues. A decision is expected in the coming days.

These rules were designed to prevent election fraud and enhance public confidence in the voting process, especially in light of ongoing concerns following the 2020 election. Republicans argue that the rules are essential for ensuring fair and secure elections in Georgia.

The outcome of this legal challenge could influence how elections are conducted in Georgia, a state that remains politically competitive and closely watched.
