Frustrated Political Elites Show Frustration At Trump’s Inauguration

As President Donald Trump prepares for his second term, several prominent political elites are making their frustration obvious by refusing to fully participate in inaugural events. Former Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton will attend the swearing-in but are skipping the traditional inaugural luncheon. This long-standing tradition, in place since 1897, has symbolized unity among past and current leaders, but these political figures are choosing to distance themselves.

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has chosen to boycott the inauguration entirely. Although she is recovering from hip surgery, Pelosi has been present for other major events, raising speculation that her absence is politically motivated. Pelosi’s long history of opposition to Trump is well-known, from leading impeachment efforts to famously tearing up his State of the Union address.

Former first lady Michelle Obama will also not be attending the inauguration, even though former President Barack Obama will. Her absence follows her decision to skip former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, signaling a growing pattern of avoiding bipartisan traditions.

Bush, Obama and Clinton’s decision to avoid the luncheon is a sharp contrast to their participation in Trump’s first inauguration in 2017. Their absence now underscores how deep their resentment has become toward Trump’s leadership.

The inaugural luncheon, organized by the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies, traditionally brings together the president, vice president and congressional leaders for a meal that celebrates the transfer of power. Skipping this event sends a strong message of personal disdain.

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will also be absent from the luncheon, further highlighting how Washington insiders are unwilling to set aside their personal grievances.
