2024 presidential contender and professor Cornel West recently announced the formation of a new “Justice for All Party” to tackle the so-called “suppression of voter choice.”
In a statement, West announced the creation of the new political party, which he said would be used “as a grassroots, people-powered vehicle to secure ballot access in specific states.”
Big announcement! We are establishing the JUSTICE FOR ALL PARTY, laying down the roots for proportional representation and expanded voter choice in states where establishing a party is the most expedient — starting with FLORIDA, NORTH CAROLINA, and the state of WASHINGTON! “Additionally, JFA will grow into a larger formation that galvanizes people-powered initiatives to promote transformational change beyond the 2024 election cycle,” West added.
West praised the creation of the new political party as a “celebration of the power of grassroots organizing,” saying it would act as a check on the “era of corporate political parties.”
“JRA, first and foremost, provides a mechanism for our grassroots campaign to travel a path of least resistance that will require the fewest number of signatures to attain ballot access in states like North Carolina, Florida, and Washington,” the independent presidential hopeful said.
“The campaign acknowledges the unique political climates of each state and respects the decision-making power of the movement in guiding the party’s formation,” he continued.
West vowed that the new party would follow the wishes of prominent activists such as “Martin Luther King, Joshua Abraham Heschel, Dorothy Day and so many others who dared to bear witness to an iniquitous political system and directly confront it.”
The well-known professor announced his intention to run for president on June 5, 2023, seeking the Green Party’s nomination. He eventually abandoned the primary process and said he would run as an independent candidate. Now, he will be running as a candidate for the newly established political party.
West’s presidential candidacy could affect President Joe Biden’s wishes to win reelection in 2024. An Emerson College poll showed that his involvement in the 2024 presidential election could sway the contest in former President Donald Trump’s favor.
West is one of multiple presidential hopefuls running as an independent or third-party candidate.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr is running as an independent in the presidential race but is reportedly considering dropping his independent presidential bid to run as a member of the Libertarian Party instead.
