Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-WI) is demanding an investigation after discovering that more than 2,000 duplicate absentee ballots were distributed without barcodes in Madison, Wisconsin. Despite assurances from the Madison Clerk’s Office that these ballots had matching barcodes and couldn’t be submitted twice, Tiffany’s office found evidence suggesting otherwise.
Tiffany expressed outrage over the incident, sharing a photo of a ballot missing the barcode entirely. He wrote a letter to Madison’s city clerk, Maribeth Witzel-Behl, seeking clarification and demanding accountability. Tiffany questioned how such an error occurred and asked whether law enforcement had been contacted to investigate.
In his letter, Tiffany pointed out that the Clerk’s Office had only provided a vague statement addressing the issue. He demanded to know the exact number of duplicate ballots sent out and whether this was simply an oversight or something more concerning.
The ballots in question were sent to about 10 wards in Madison. Tiffany stressed the importance of transparency and accountability in ensuring the integrity of absentee voting, especially as more voters opt for mail-in ballots.
Election integrity has been a major concern for many Republicans, and this latest revelation has only fueled more skepticism about the reliability of absentee ballots. Tiffany urged that this issue be taken seriously and that any officials responsible for the mistake be held accountable.
As the 2024 election approaches, Tiffany’s demands for an investigation highlight the continued debate over absentee voting security and the need for stricter controls to prevent further errors.
