Congress Prepares To Certify Trump’s Electoral College Victory Later Today

Later today, Congress will certify the 2024 Electoral College results, confirming the once and future president, Donald Trump, as the 47th president of the United States. This certification comes four years after Trump “lost” the 2020 election amid allegations of irregularities and fraud.

Trump’s 312-226 Electoral College win over Vice President Kamala Harris will be finalized during a joint session of Congress. Harris, fulfilling her constitutional duty as president of the Senate, will preside over the session, which includes the formal reading of state-certified results.

Objections to state certifications are allowed under federal law but must be supported by one-fifth of members from both chambers to be considered. No such objections are expected to meet the required threshold during today’s proceedings.

This certification contrasts with the events of January 6, 2021, when then-Vice President Mike Pence certified Biden’s victory under heavily disputed circumstances. Trump’s supporters have long pointed to that day as a symbol of their concerns about election integrity.

With Republican control of both the House and Senate, Trump’s administration is expected to move forward with a clear legislative mandate. Today’s certification serves as a critical step in securing his second term.

Preparations for Trump’s January 20 inauguration are in full swing as the nation looks ahead to the formal start of his presidency.
