Chicago Mayor: Texas Gov. Abbott ‘Governing Out Of Fear’

Upset about his sanctuary city being overrun by illegal immigrants, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson (D) claimed on Friday that Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s (R) move to send them to Democratic cities is destroying local economies and that he is “governing out of fear.”

The Windy City has seen more than 26,000 illegal immigrants arrive since August 2022 and currently has over 14,000 housed in 27 shelters across the city.

Johnson made the statement while appearing on “CNN This Morning,” blaming Abbott for overwhelming the city with illegal immigrants

“And look, the bottom line is this — at least for my experiences — is that we have a Governor in Texas that is governing out of fear,” he said in reference to Abbott’s sending illegal immigrants to cities like Chicago, New York City, and Denver.

This isn’t the first time Johnson has fired back at the Texas governor. A few weeks ago, he called Abbott out, blaming him for the death of a 5-year-old staying in one of the shelters. The mayor claimed that illegals arriving in the city are in “quite disturbing” conditions and that it is “sickening” to hold the city accountable.

“The issue is not just how we respond in the city of Chicago, it’s the fact that we have a governor, an elected official in the state of Texas that is placing families on buses without shoes, cold, wet, tired, hungry, afraid, traumatized and then they come to the city of Chicago where we have homelessness, we have mental health clinics that have been shut down and closed,” he said.

As with the left, Johnson also threw race into the mix, since Abbott was picking on Johnson because he’s Black and not because of his policies.

“Don’t disrespect the people who have been working on the front line, fighting to bring dignity to Black people who have been harmed by the same policies that buddy from Texas is trying to instigate,” he said.

What Johnson failed to mention was how 80% of homicide victims in Chicago were Black in 2021 under former Mayor Lori Lightfoot. Maybe Abbott was somehow responsible for that as well.
