The Biden administration is facing mounting criticism over its handling of the southern border crisis, with shocking new data revealing a significant increase in the number of illegal immigrants eluding Border Patrol agents. According to data obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, over 1.6 million “gotaways” were recorded from Fiscal Year 2021 through 2023, marking a substantial surge compared to previous administrations.
The figures, disclosed by Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, depict a dire situation exacerbated by the Biden administration’s lax immigration policies. The surge in “gotaways” reflects a failure to effectively secure the border and apprehend illegal border crossers, posing significant challenges to national security.
EXCLUSIVE: Internal CBP data I obtained via FOIA request reveals 13 years of known gotaways data at the border, showing gotaways have *exploded* under the Biden admin compared to the Trump & Obama years.

Throughout the past decade, the number of “gotaways” ranged from 86,226 in Fiscal Year 2011 to 171,663 in Fiscal Year 2013. However, the situation escalated dramatically under the Biden administration, with the number surging to 387,398 in Fiscal Year 2021 and exceeding 670,000 in Fiscal Year 2023.
The surge in “gotaways” is attributed to a combination of factors, including a spike in illegal border crossings and enhanced surveillance technology enabling authorities to better track those evading Border Patrol detection.
Compounding the crisis is the alarming mishandling of deportation cases by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). A recent report from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse revealed that over 200,000 deportation cases have been dismissed due to administrative and procedural errors since the start of the Biden administration.
The dismissal of deportation cases underscores the administration’s failure to uphold immigration laws and ensure the integrity of the deportation process. Without proper vetting and adjudication of deportation cases, individuals with potential criminal backgrounds could evade accountability and pose a threat to public safety.
Critics argue that the Biden administration’s border policies have exacerbated an already dire situation, placing undue strain on cities and border towns grappling with the influx of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers. The failure to address the root causes of the border crisis raises concerns about the administration’s ability to effectively manage illegal immigration and safeguard national security.
As the crisis persists, illegal immigration is poised to become a defining issue in the upcoming presidential election, with voters scrutinizing candidates’ approaches to border security and immigration enforcement.
