158 Democrats Refuse To Support Bill Targeting Criminal Immigrants

A bill targeting illegal immigrants convicted of sex crimes passed the House with bipartisan support, but 158 Democrats voted against it, sparking outrage from Republican lawmakers. The Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act, authored by Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), passed 266-158.

The legislation focuses on deporting illegal immigrants guilty of sexual offenses or domestic violence. Critics of the 158 Democrats who opposed the measure accused them of prioritizing political agendas over protecting women and children.

Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) argued that the bill scapegoats immigrants and fails to address systemic issues. Her remarks drew sharp criticism from Republicans, who highlighted the importance of enforcing laws to prevent violent crimes.

Mace’s sponsorship of the bill comes as her own record is questioned. Who has distanced herself from Trump, she proposed confronting rioters during the January 6 protests to gain media attention. Despite reported efforts to gain notoriety grandstanding against Trump over that day, Mace has since sought his support, raising skepticism about her motivations.

Democrats who supported the bill included Reps. Jared Moskowitz (D-FL) and Marie Gluesenkamp-Perez (D-WA). Their votes underscore bipartisan concerns about crimes linked to illegal immigration.

This vote follows other GOP initiatives addressing public safety and immigration, key issues in debates over border policy.
